History of the railway

The Gare de Fontvieille – Abbaye de Montmajour railway line, owned by RDT13, is getting a makeover with a new activity: the Vélorail des Alpilles. Created in 1875, this railway line located between Arles and Salon-de-Provence is rich in stories! At the time it was mainly used for the transport of goods such as quarry stones. Fontvieille and Baux de Provence, wine and olive oil. It also carries passengers from all surrounding areas. In 1913, the Bouches-du-Rhône Department entrusted the management of all of the territory's railway lines to the RDT13, including the Arles/Salon-de-Provence line. But faced with competition from automobiles and bus networks, the passenger transport stopped in 1933. Shortly after the Second World War, the line was completely stripped of iron, with the exception of the Arles section - Fontvieille, used for the arsenal of the National Navy. Between 2001 and 2013, RDT13 rehabilitated the line and operated the tourist train, the Petit Train des Alpilles. In June 2021, the railway line resumes service with the Vélorail des Alpilles!

Our rail bikes are equipped with 2 pedal seats with braking system at the front, and 3 seats at the rear.
